Background of the study

Digital visual content has transformed language use by merging imagery and text, leading to novel morphosyntactic patterns among Nigerian social media users. On Instagram, visually driven posts combine captions and images to create hybrid constructions that often defy traditional grammatical rules. In contrast, Facebook posts—typically longer and text heavy—show different morphosyntactic trends influenced by multimedia elements such as embedded images and videos (Adeola, 2023). Nigerian users adapt their language to suit the affordances of each platform, leading to variations in sentence structure, word order, and the integration of emojis or symbols as functional grammatical elements. These digital practices highlight the evolution of morphosyntax in response to technological innovation and cultural expression. Recent studies suggest that visual content plays a crucial role in reconfiguring language structures by providing context cues that supplement or even replace conventional syntactic markers (Ibrahim, 2024). This comparative analysis seeks to document the specific morphosyntactic changes that arise on Instagram versus Facebook, considering factors such as audience, cultural context, and platform constraints. By investigating a corpus of posts from both platforms, the study will offer insights into how digital visual content catalyzes language innovation in Nigeria and inform theoretical models of morphosyntactic evolution in digital environments (Obi, 2025).

Statement of the problem

Despite the growing influence of digital visual content, there is limited empirical research examining its effect on morphosyntactic patterns in Nigerian social media. Current studies often generalize language change across platforms, neglecting the unique visual and textual interplay on Instagram and Facebook. This gap makes it difficult for educators and policymakers to understand how digital imagery modifies traditional syntax and word order. The absence of a comparative analysis limits our ability to develop effective models of digital morphosyntactic change and hinders strategies for integrating these trends into language education (Chinwe, 2023). This study aims to address these deficiencies by systematically comparing the morphosyntactic structures emerging from Instagram and Facebook, thereby offering a clearer understanding of the digital impact on language.

Objectives of the study

1. To identify and compare morphosyntactic patterns on Instagram and Facebook.

2. To analyze the influence of visual content on sentence structure and word order.

3. To develop theoretical insights for digital morphosyntactic evolution.

Research questions

1. What morphosyntactic variations are evident on Instagram compared to Facebook?

2. How does digital visual content influence grammatical constructions?

3. What role do cultural and platform-specific factors play in shaping these patterns?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it elucidates the role of digital visual content in reshaping Nigerian morphosyntax. The findings will contribute to sociolinguistic theory and offer practical insights for educators and policymakers adapting language curricula to reflect digital innovations (Adeola, 2023; Obi, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study

The study is limited to analyzing posts on Instagram and Facebook by Nigerian users, excluding other platforms and offline contexts.

Definitions of terms

• Morphosyntactic Patterns: The combination of morphological and syntactic structures in language.

• Digital Visual Content: Multimedia posts that integrate images with textual elements.

• Comparative Analysis: A method that contrasts linguistic features across different platforms.
